8.00am inspection  31/1/2019
Hughie L reports that, whilst the playing surface is covered in Tuesday's snow, the carpark gravel is not and that the equivalent of 4 'pistes' are free to play on! Those members intending to play are advised to dress appropriately for cold weather!
JL
Snow covered piste  30/1/2019
The temperature is too low for the snow cover to disappear over night. So I fear that play will not be possible tomorrow.
JL
Thursday snow boule  24/1/2019
The piste displays large areas without residual snow, so games can be played. A bag of salt is available to treat paths and woodwork.
Those with thermal layers and gloves could enjoy a bracing game or two at 10.00; see you there!!!

Ladder  21/1/2019
More movement on Sunday, with Hughie climbing. As the Ladder Competition is so active, I have decided that from now on although I will update the ladder immediately when I am notified that a player has climbed a rung, I will only send out an update message once a week, probably on a Monday. I'm sure you're all as fed up with receiving so many messages as I am with writing them! Any objections?

As Janet and Ivan Sargeant are likely to be away for some time, players immediately beneath them may now challenge the players above Janet and Ivan. This will keep the ladder 'live' while they are away. Enjoy your sunshine, Janet and Ivan!

Ladder Competition  28/9/2018
It appears that the main text of my message yesterday does not appear on the E mail notification, so here it is again. Apologies if you've already read it.
When playing a LADDER MATCH, please arrange to play OUTSIDE our normal social sessions, held on a Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. If members have difficulty in arranging a match at other times, perhaps their ladder match could be played before or after one of our social sessions. This will avoid spoiling our social sessions, which really ought to be for the enjoyment of everyone on the piste, rather than causing division between social and match players. I'm sure the rules for our ladder competition will evolve, so if anyone has comments or suggestions, I want to hear them, please. Thank you all for your support. Remember, it is about friendly enjoyment. (Except in my case, because I've just been beaten by Ivan, who I challenged straight after the draw... GRRR)! Joint second to play to establish 'Top Rung'.
A regularly updated hard copy of the ladder will appear in the clubhouse.
Results and comments etc. to me on 07890 269673 or email

Deliberate Mistake!  26/9/2018
The Ladder draw will take place tomorrow morning during tea break, NOT after the 'evenings play' as stated in my last message. I am highly surprised that none of you pedants pointed out that we don't meet on a Thursday evening.... Eric.
Re The New Rules and Ladder  25/9/2018
Well said Geoff! I agree.
The Ladder competition draw for starting places will be made after Thursday evening's play. (In the pub). Any lat minute entries to me asap please. Eric.
The new Rules  25/9/2018
The whole essence of Boules is that it is a simple game to be played on almost any surface. Trying to make it an Olympic sport has brought about a new set of complicated rules. DO we need them for our social games or even our league matches, I don't think so in five years of playing in club matches I have never heard a row over rules and very, very, rarely does anybody cheat. Lets play our KO our Ladder and our social games as we always have as Boules was meant to be. Geoff
Autumn Tournament September 23rd  21/9/2018
I am so sorry but the weather forecast for Sunday is so bad we have no option but to cancel the Autumn Tournament. The Farmers Boy have been very good and accepted our cancellation of the food.We will see if we can arrange something for early October before it gets too cold. Geoff

NEW! LADDER COMPETITION  29/8/2018
LADDER COMPETITION

With Geoff's (Compeition Secretary) blessing, I will be happy to organise and admimistrate a LADDER competition for our club.

A 'ladder' competition is purely for fun, but provides a competetive element throughout the year. It is a very social, easygoing type of competition which any member can enter at any time (and leave at any time).

I intend to use the result of our knockout competition (if the players want to join the ladder) as a rough starting point, with the 'best' players at the bottom, so that they must challenge others and win, in order to climb the ladder. All other places above the bottom five or six will be drawn out of the hat. This system will encourage more matches for everyone, as 'good' players will need to make more challenges in order to achieve their natural position higher up the ladder.
In theory, after a few months, the ladder should settle into a natural and fair ranking system.

Once the ladder is established, anyone can challenge the person directly above them on the ladder to a singles match, normally to be played within 3 weeks of the challenge being issued. If the challenger wins, he or she goes to one place above the person they beat. So, if the top of the ladder is;

1 Alan
2 Tom
3 Susan
4 Mary

Susan can only challenge Tom. If she beats him, she goes to second place...

1 Alan
2 Susan
3 Tom
4 Mary,
and Tom becomes third, above Mary. So now, Susan can challenge Alan, and of course, Tom can challenge Susan to try to regain his rung on the ladder. Mary can now challenge Tom... Easy! The only person who can't challenge anyone is the player at the top of the ladder. If the challenger loses, the ladder positions don't change.

After the ladder is established, anyone can join it, but must start at the bottom.

There might have be a few other rules to avoid dispute, but we'll see how the competition evolves. Any suggestions to improve it will be welcomed. It is intended to be FRIENDLY and INFORMAL!

The really important bit is to send me the result of your match, so that I can update the ladder and publish it on the club website.

The ladder would run continuously, free of charge and NO PRIZES.... (but we might congratulate the 'Top of the Ladder' with a bottle of something once a year).

If you would like to join the ladder from its inception, please send me a message on my personal email, johnoliver999@hotmail.com
or give me a call on 07890 269673.
Don't try to reply on here!

Best wishes,

John Oliver (Eric).

Singles Knockout  20/8/2018
We have now reached the semi-final stage but because of the number of entrants we have only have three players. We will therefore include the winner Pete Millman of the first round losers and tomorrow evening the 21st make the draw for the semi-finals. Geoff
Memorial Day 29th July  15/7/2018

Memorial Day 29th July  9/7/2018
I would be grateful if you could let me know as soon as possible if you intend to play, to help Janet organize the play and me to organize the food. Geoff
Away Day July 5th  2/7/2018
It is always fun and a challenge to play on a new piste so let's have a good turnout on Thursday. Meet at 10.00am at Letchworth Family Golf Course, Maurice has kindly offered to take people from FB but if anybody else needs a lift ring me on 01992464347. Geoff
Away Day July 5th  19/6/2018
I have now been told that there will be a charge of two pounds per person for the use of the piste, I think this is quite fair it is the same as what we charge our visitors. Geoff
Away Day July 5th  15/6/2018
Keith has organised a boules morning at Letchworth golf club on July 5th. They have an excellent piste which we can use for free, there is a cafe where we can obtain coffee when we arrive and a snack or cooked lunch after we have played. We would meet at 10.00am,they have a website with pictures of the club and piste,www.letchworthfamilygolf.co.uk.Let me know if you are coming Geoff
New play registration system  1/6/2018
Starting on SUNDAY June 3rd the old play attendance sheets are obsolete. This is because all members and visiting players are now insured by the BPBC insurance scheme for playing Petanque at home and our members for away also.
The new PLAY REGISTRATION LOG BOOK requires only your initials in capitals in a small box on the line opposite the day's date.
Of course you have to pay as usual!
